Art by Walter Ben Hill
Walter began making these wire
sculptures at the age of 11 when he picked up a piece of bailing wire
in the yard and made Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in great detail. This is
all the more remarkable because Wally is a boy with autism. His next
creation was Cinderella’s coach and his ability has grown with
time.
He won trophies and ribbons for his
art work during his twelfth year and had his first one man show at the
local Hilltop Gallery here in Nogales, Arizona in December 2006. The
Superintendent of Schools for Santa Cruz County saw his work and asked
for it to be brought into the school Libraries for the children to see.
This has led to a magical
experience for Walter who goes to show the kids how he makes his
sculptures and for the children who are learning about autism and art
at the same time. They learn that we all have different intelligences
and abilities and we all belong.
Walter enjoys creating beautiful
things with his hands.
